One of those things I love about being a Coheed fan

• AMP Magazine: Since [My Brother's Blood Machine] does tie in with the Coheed and Cambria story, is it a concept album?
• Claudio Sanchez: It is a concept to an extent. Even Coheed and Cambria, a lot of the concept derives from personal experience. So a lot of the songs are very honest and primarily from a first-person perspective. Then I take that and I use it to feed some of the characters and some of the plots in the story. It is a fictitious story and takes place in a modern-day setting where Inferno, who happens to be a character within the mythology of Coheed and Cambria and actually dies in Good Apollo, the most recent Coheed record, comes back reincarnated on a present-day Earth. And he has a job to do, basically to tell the story of the Blood Machine. Before he can tell the story of the Amory Wars, which is the Coheed story, he has to tell the story of the Blood Machine. And the premise of the Blood Machine is that there’s this family called the Bleams, and I’m still working out some of the details, but primarily it’s about this woman who’s gone completely mad living in this pretty secluded town called Margretville. She and her husband are meth heads and it gets to a point where the husband gets killed in a bust, but he was so out of his mind that he actually takes her legs off with a chainsaw.
• AMP: Wow!
• CS: Yeah. But she’s so whacked out on these drugs that when she passes she has this idea that God has given her children a higher purpose. That is, that they are going to take the role of Death, the Grim Reaper. And her two boys, due to her experimenting with drugs, have been… They’re kind of mutated a bit. One of the characters is named Long-Arm. He has one very long arm, kind of looks like the guy from The Hills Have Eyes. And the other one is Butchie, who is kind of a short chunky-faced looking guy. Very much the archetype, like Pinky and the Brain kind of characters, only we’re talking about a horror setting. But their mother tells them, “This is what you have to do. God has given you a job.” And they’re so whacked out of their minds as well that they think when someone passes that the soul doesn’t leave the body. Instead, they think they have to draw the soul from the body, and that’s the creation of the Blood Machine. Basically, rips the body apart and collects the blood, and that’s their job. Then, on the other side of it there’s the love story between the McCloud family, Cecilia McCloud, and the Early family, Johnny Early. The Early family is the poor family of the town. The McClouds are more like the kings of the town. They don’t really know about the relationship between the kids, but it turns out that Cecilia’s father molests her and she’s on the verge of killing him. Then it gets to a point where she’s like, “I don’t know if I should kill him, but I should run away.” She wants to take her younger brothers, the twins, with her, and she wants Johnny to run away with her. But it ends up that Johnny stays behind. She runs away, and she runs into the woods where the Bleams live. Then there’s a whole other love story there between… They eventually end up killing Cecilia. Long-Arm has love for her corpse and doesn’t want to put it into the Blood Machine, whereas Butchie is the extreme opposite and is like, “You’ve got to follow God’s rules.” That’s pretty much the story. (Laughing)
• AMP: That’s pretty dark…
• CS: Yeah. (Laughing)
